Coastal Incentive Grant Status Report

Summary of Work Completed

The following milestones have been completed:

  1. Lecture, Guale Historical Society
    A lecture on the cultural history of Camden County and the upcoming Archaeological Survey was presented in October 2005. An additional lecture was presented in February 2006 to the Camden Newcomers Alumni Club
     
  2. Artifact I.D. Day Workshop
    An Archaeology Workshop was held on December 3, 2005 at the St. Marys Library in St. Marys, Georgia. The workshop was free and open to the public. Examples of prehistoric and historic artifacts were on display. Several attended and brought artifacts or studied the displayed items.
     
  3. Website Formation.
    The website has been created and running since January 2006. The website address is http://www.camdencounty.org/CCAS.
     
  4. Background Archaeological Research.
    Background archaeological research included a survey of sites already documented, examination of historical maps and narratives, and interviews with local citizens.
     
  5. VSU Field School Report 
    A VSU class, ANTH 4900 Public Archaeology, was taught during 2006 Spring Term A. It involved the students directly in the archaeology inventory survey and the exhibits.
     
  6. Collector's Workshop
    A Collector's Workshop was held on January 28, 2006 at the Camden County Library, Kingsland, Georgia. The workshop was free and open to the public. An overview of prehistory and history of Camden County was presented, along with responsible methods for collecting and curating artifacts.
     
  7. Lecture, Family History Center, Kingsland.
    A lecture, "Finding Your Family Farm," was presented at the Family History Center Workshop in Kingsland on March 4, 2006.
     
  8. Field Reconnaissance, Phase I
    Field reconnaissance is ongoing, and includes surface inspection of clearcuts, and  examination of locations known by local citizens or documented in the historical records.  The site is documented by use of photography and a GPS Unit to extract locational UTM coordinates. All information is kept confidential to protect the landowner. Archaeological site forms are stored at the University of Georgia's Archaeological Site Files in Athens. Access is restricted to professional archaeologists or other research-oriented individuals.
     
  9. Exhibit
    One local traveling exhibit has been completed. It is a tri-fold board presently on display in the St. Marys/Camden library.
