Lost and Found

Everyday dogs are lost, and pet owners and their children are sad and lonely.

Here are a few tips that can help your pet from becoming a lost pet.

  • keep your dog on a leash or in a fenced area
  • keep your cat indoors
  • make sure your pet wears a collar with a name tag giving your address and phone number
  • take a photo of your pet
  • keep a record of your dog's age, weight, height, and any special markings
  • have your pet's record of vaccinations and it's rabies tag number, or license number
  • some owners have an I.D. number tattooed on the inside of the hind leg by a veterinarian
  • some owners have a microchip implanted by the veterinarian

If your pet does become lost:

  • check your pet's favorite play spots, girlfriend?....boyfriend?
  • call Animal Control, report the pet's license/rabies tag number and description
  • check with the animal shelter every day and post the description of your pet on the bulletin board
  • listen for barking in the neighborhood, many dogs bark at another dog running loose
  • call your neighbors, check with the mailman
  • call the local radio station to find out if they can report your lost pet
  • make sure someone is near the phone while you are out looking
  • read the Lost and Found notices in the paper
  • make LOST pet signs, including the description and a picture
  • when your pet is found, give him/her a happy welcome home! :)

Due to the number of lost/missing pets, the Humane Society cannot take these descriptions over the phone. They request that you come in to the shelter to post the notice on their bulletin board and to take a look at the stray animals. Your pet may be there. Often your description may not match what we are looking at, so it is best if you come and look yourself.
