| 3. CHARLES RINALDO FLOYD born 14 October 1797 at "The Thickets" nr. Darien, McIntosh Co., GA; married 1st CATHERINE SOPHIA POWELL
on 22 May 1823 in Boston, MA. Two children (Catherine Isabel, Autossee). According to The FloydLetters 1823-1841, comp. by John Hughes Corson: Her name was Catherine Sophia Caldwell, born 1805 in MA; her sister was Elizabeth Jane Caldwell, born 1806; their parents were STEPHEN CALDWELL & CATHERINE ARCHIBALD/POWELL
(Catherine Archibald had her name legally changed by the MA Legislature to Catherine Goldthwaite Powell & was adopted by her half aunt, Catherine Goldthwaite Gardiner Powell = "Madame Powell"). Catherine Sophia Powell Floyd died 17 July 1828 in Boston, MA. He married 2nd JULIA ROSS BOOG on 09 September 1831 at Bellevue Plantation, Camden County, GA by Rev. Joseph C. Stiles (CCG Marriage Bk. B 1831-1880 p. 3). Seven children (Mary Faith,
Isabel Autossee, Rosalie Sarah, John Gallie, Charles Rinaldo Jr., Charles Rinaldo Jr., Richard Samuel). Julia Ross Boog was born 16 April 1815 at Kings Bay nr. St. Marys, GA, the eldest daughter of JOHNBOOG (b. 1775 Golspie, Sutherlandshire, Scotland, son of James Boog & ChristinaRoss; d. 1825 St. Marys, GA) & ISABELLA KING KELLY TURNER (b. 1791 Falmouth, Jamaica, dau. of Robert Kelly &
Margaret Faith; adopted by her uncle Thomas King of King's Bay; m. 1st Daniel Turner; d. 1825 St. Marys, GA - "Letters & Papers of Dr. Daniel Turner: A Rhode Islander In South Georgia," col. & ed. by Richard K. Murdoch, GA Hist. Quarterly 1969 & 1970). (Her sisters were Margaret Ann Boog & Mordina Jane Boog - successive wives of Henry Hamilton Floyd). Charles Rinaldo Floyd was ed. at home by tutors; went to school in
Beaufort, SC; attended Sunbury Academy in Sunbury, GA. At age sixteen he left school to join his father's army at Ft. Mitchell; served as military aide to his father in the Creek War - Battles of Autossee & Chalibee. He attended West Point - was dismissed in 1817 for insubordination over what he considered "a Point of honor." He received a commission as Lt. in the Marines; traveled to England & Napoleonic battlefields of Europe; was commander of Marine honor
guard for the visit of Marquis de Lafayette to NY in 1824. Though they never met, he corresponded with his 1st wife's sister - on 17 June 1835 he addressed a letter to Miss E. J. Caldwell in Augusta, Maine: "... The last winter has, by its extreme severity, done us almost incalculable mischief. All the beautiful groves of orange & olive trees are destroyed, and while I now write the axe is leveling the dead trees in my late beautiful grove, for fire wood. Thirty mild
winters would not repair the damage done by the last severe one ... The value of the property has been much depreciated here by the loss of the orange groves ... I remain, My dear Sister, Your Sincere friend" (The Floyd Letters 1823-1841). He was elected Brigadier-General of 1st Brigade, GA State Militia; he commanded troops effecting removal of Cherokee Indians - wrote to troops under his command, "A truly good soldier is known chiefly by his ready compliance with the
orders of his superior---his valor in battle, and his humanity to the vanquished" ("General Charles R. Floyd And The Second Seminole War In The Okefenokee Swamp," by C. T. Trowell, Huxford Genealogical Magazine, September 1996). In 1838 he commanded troops in pursuit of Seminole Indians which led into the Okefenokee Swamp; his officers named Floyd Island within the swamp (History ofCamden County GA, by James T. Vocelle; M.H. & D.B. Floyd Col. #1308,
Box 7, Folder 71 - GA Hist. Soc. Lib.). In 1839 he qualified as one of the executors of his father's will (CCG Inf. Ct. Minutes). On 04 April 1843 he sold 2000 acres of marsh land that was originally granted in 1807 to Charles & John Floyd - to Amee Delaroche [sic] for $400.00 (CCG Deed Bk. N p. 364 & 365). He was a Georgia Legislator - House of Representatives; his father gave him Fairfield Plantation; he was founder of Camden County Hunting Club; built champion
racing boats; had a reputation for dueling & for arbitrating duels; collector of rare weapons; artist; musician; poet; writer (Files of Brice McAdoo Clagett, Friendship, MD). NOTE: At dawn on 05 October 1837, his infamous duel with Gen. Edward S. Hopkins was fought on Amelia Island Beach. Historians present two reasons for the duel: One, Floyd cattle kept jumping the fence onto Hopkins property destroying their pea-patch and Charles R. Floyd became incensed when he
discovered Hopkins slaves killing his cattle - "Contemptible scoundrel" and "Cow thief" was what CRF called Hopkins. Two, Charles R. Floyd, as Brigadier General, was infuriated when Edward S. Hopkins was granted a commission as Major in the GA Militia without his permission. As a matter of honor, a challenge was initiated. Hopkins accepted and under the "Code Duello": Double-barrel shotguns were to be used first, if no one fell, then combatants
were to advance with pistols, then finish with Bowie knives. The previous day the Floyds left in rowboats from docks near Fairfield Plantation for Amelia Island. They spent the night on the beach "amidst multitudes of mosquitoes...he [Hopkins] had procured Stuart's famous gun, by applying for her before me - but I was armed with a gun belonging to Mr. Samuel Baker of Liberty County equally good, if not better...the enemy wore blue pantaloons and black velvet jacket...I was
dressed in white pantaloons & a drab hunting shirt of linen" ("Diary," by Charles R. Floyd - copy in GA Hist. Soc. Lib., Savannah, GA; original in possession of Brice M. Clagett, Washington, DC). Floyd's second was Dr. H. D. Holland; his surgeon was Dr. Bacon of Liberty Co.; spectators were his brother Richard Floyd, & friend, Col. Henry Dubignon. Hopkins' second was John H. Dilworth; his surgeon was Dr. Henry Bacon of St. Marys; spectators were his brother
Ben Hopkins, & another young man. Gen. Charles R. Floyd felled Edward S. Hopkins - the buckshot in his left thigh and right calf made it impossible for him to continue. From that time on, Gen. Edward S. Hopkins walked with a marked limp but outlived Gen. Charles R. Floyd by 42 years. "My information is that both before and after the Amelia Beach affair, the most cordial relations existed between the two families" (Quote by Judge H. W. Hopkins, nephew of Edward
S. Hopkins - in his 1932 letter to Rosa Lee Russell, who was researching the Floyd/Hopkins duel for Mary Givens Bryan, GA State Archivist). Charles Rinaldo Floyd died 22 March 1845 & is buried under a pine tree at the site of Fairfield Plantation (marble obelisk & monument in honor of his patriotic service was erected by US Govt. - Camden's Challenge, by Marguerite Reddick, p. 185). Julia Ross Boog Floyd died 30 January 1852 & is buried at Floyd Family Cem. nr.
