| 5. JOHN FENDIN FLOYD born 25 January 1802 in Camden Co., GA; married ANN HUNT ALSTON on 03 December 1829 in Sparta, GA. No issue. She was the daughter of COL. ROBERT ALSTON
of Sparta, Hancock Co., GA. John F. Floyd was educated at Mount Zion, nr. Sparta; a fine musician; elected Major of the 8th Battalion in CCG; member of the State Legislature. He was considered handsome, well-built, had light curly hair; his features resembled those of his mother's. In mid-January 1830, John Fendin Floyd & his father, Gen. John Floyd, accompanied Caroline Floyd Blackshear & Ann H. Alston Floyd while these ladies were on a shopping trip in Darien, GA. John Fendin Floyd was walking down the street when he unexpectedly came upon Allen B. Powell, Esq., who had had a political misunderstanding with his father. John Fendin Floyd struck Mr. Powell with his riding whip. This act obviously enraged Allen B. Powell so much that he promptly took out a pistol and fired it directly at John F. Floyd. Floyd was carried into a nearby drugstore - his wife, sister & father rushed there just in time. His father asked him if he was hurt. His reply was: "Yes, shot through my vitals." His body was taken by boat to Camden County, to the residence of Charles Rinaldo Floyd, where he was buried by torchlight. When they finally told his mother, she was so devastated that she insisted on having his body exhumed so that she could "place her hand on the wound that had cost him his life, and cut a lock of his beautiful hair from the head it adorned." (A Little Family History,
by Mary Hazzard Floyd Hamilton; GA Gen. Mag. - Abstracts from: The Southern Recorder 06 February 1830, pub. weekly at Milledgeville). John Fendin Floyd died on 25 January 1830 in Darien, GA & is buried at the Floyd Fam. Cem. nr. the site of Fairfield Plantation. Ann Hunt Alston Floyd returned to her family. She was living in Milledgeville, GA, when, on 28 December 1832, Gen. John Floyd gave her a gift of 14 slaves (CCG Deed Bk. M p. 102). She married 2nd Decimus Gaillard of Charleston, who not long after, was shot & killed while hunting. She married 3rd General King of AL, who, also left her a widow. She died (no dates) - no issue.
