[Brown Book] [Brown P1] [Brown P3] [Brown P26] [Brown P45] [Brown P70] [Brown P96]

Introduction

My interest in the Brown family began at the age of seven when my grandfather, Frank Hopkins Brown, and I were sitting on an old wooden bench under the grapefruit tree in his back yard in Miami, Florida and I asked, "Granddaddy, who was your father?"

The "Brown History and Lineage" begins with Robert Brown, who, according to records owned land in South Carolina prior to 1774.  The manuscript continues with a history of his son, Hugh Brown Senior, focusing on elements of the American Revolution which forced him to leave South Carolina and relocate in Florida.  I have endeavored to outline the series of circumstances that brought Hugh Brown Senior to British East Florida and from there to Camden County, Georgia.

The account continues with Hugh Brown Senior's son, Hugh Brown Junior, and his grandson, James David Brown - both of Camden County.   Their stories are based on numerous documents and records available which substantiate the chronology of events in the lives of these extraordinary men.

Years ago, I began gathering research material on Hugh Brown Senior and his son, Hugh Brown Junior.  When I  discovered that my cousin, Kathleen Carmichael Adams,  was doing the same research - I contacted her.  Ever since, we have conferred on this extensive line and have shared our documentation.

I am deeply indebted to Kathleen Carmichael Adams for her assistance and especially for her time spent in editing this manuscript.

A very special thanks to my son, Rob T. Mathews, for his patience in scanning the land plats and for providing the computer graphics.

My grateful appreciation and thanks goes to every one of you who contributed information for this manuscript.  As with any history and lineage, there will be contradictions, errors and omissions.  It will be up to future generations to more accurately develop the historical background and continually revise the descending lineage.
