| FLOYD INTRODUCTION There is a considerable amount of material available on Charles and John Floyd, father and son, who lived on Virginia's Eastern Shore, in South Carolina and in Camden County, Georgia. This account presents a lineage, combined with a bit of history, of Charles & Mary Fendin Floyd and John & Isabella Maria Hazzard Floyd and their descendants. The documentation for the lineage of this extensive family was taken from the Floyd Volumes compiled by Alice Augusta Collar Tonge. Copies of these four volumes are in the South Caroliniana Library, Columbia, SC, the GA Dept. of Archives & History, Atlanta, GA, and in the Bryan-Lang
Library, Woodbine, GA. Over many years, Alice C. Tonge gathered data and information on the descending Floyd lines which she systematically put into notebooks. Her diligent research and extraordinary contributions have left us a lasting record that can be passed on to future generations. In order to preserve her work, I have typed the Floyd Volumes into my computer. This was undertaken with an effort to update, add and correct Alice's
original text. It was impossible to reach everyone connected with these lines; however, I hope that those who read this lineage will send me their additional information. My grateful thanks goes to all of you who contributed to this printing - and especially to the person who started it all - Alice Collar Tonge!

27609-5702 The second printing of the Floyd History & Lineage has more than doubled in size. As with the first book, a large portion contains a descending lineage of the children of John Floyd and his wife, Isabella Maria Hazzard. I have attempted to include historical sketches of a few of the descendants. Researching the background was fascinating even though at times, I was forced to settle for a fragmentary picture. Many
contributed to this second version by sharing their oral accounts, published and unpublished manuscripts, files, notes, old letters, photographs, diaries and books. My gratitude and a very special thanks goes out to the following: Louise DuBose, Marion DuBose, Sabra Goldsmith, Anne Chenault, Eudora Roebling, Bonnie Smith, Bill C. Floyd, Laura Fortson, Belle Warren, Brice Clagett, Robi Hale, Mary Wall, Bill H. Williams, Tommy Reddick, Mary Faith Spikes, Mary K. Floyd, Phil Melcher,
John H. Corson, George Fawcett, Dave Richardson, Larry Sweett, Jim Russell, Frank H. Brown, Doris McAdoo, Bitsy Noyes, Betty Williams, B.J. McNair. I am indebted to Dr. John H. Christian, librarian at the Bryan-Lang Historical Library, for his assistance in obtaining records and for his patience in answering all of my unending questions by phone or by letter; to Eloise Bailey Thompson, noted Camden County historian, for taking such an avid interest in the Floyd
family and for sharing her wonderful research material; and to Jean E. Blackmon, researcher and genealogist in Roswell, GA, who obtained many documents as well as copies of original records and letters of John Floyd. Research of this type is never complete. Although I have made a concerted effort, as with any lineage of this magnitude, there will be gaps, errors, and inconsistencies in style. I fully accept responsibility for all mistakes and compromises
and hope, instead, that everyone will find inspiration in the compilation. I am deeply grateful for the understanding and support of all Floyd family members who willingly shared their family histories and furnished information for this project - it is to them and to their descendants that this second book is dedicated.

FLOYD Compiled by: Marguerite Marree Mathews I am grateful to Tara Fields for placing my work on her Camden County, Georgia Web site. She has done a tremendous amount of work not only in Web design but in historical research, both of which she willingly shares with others. Hers is one of the most informative and interesting genealogy sites on the Web! My book, "Floyd History &
Lineage," printed and published in 1998, has been revised for the Internet. I have added additional information outlining the early Floyd lines, particularly relating to those on Virginia's Eastern Shore. And, an effort has been made to edit many of the living generations without too much destruction of the cascading lineage descent. Copies containing current generations may be found in the following: Bryan-Lang Historical Library, Woodbine, GA; Huxford
Genealogical Library, Homerville, GA; GA Historical Society Library, Savannah, GA; Dept. of Archives & History, Atlanta, GA; Caroliniana Library, Columbia, SC; South FL Historical Association, Miami, FL; LDS Library, Salt Lake City, UT; DAR Library, Washington, DC; Library of Congress, Genealogy Division, Washington, DC. |
