The Floyds claim descent from Llewellyn Floyd, one of the last of the Welsh Kings.  Unsubstantiated Floyd family legend asserts that at least three Floyd brothers came from Wales to Accomack and Northampton Counties around 1675, forming the foundation of this extensive family along the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Records reveal that the name FLOYD appeared on Virginia's Eastern Shore in both Accomack and Northampton Counties before this date.

NOTE:  For accurate, factual (citations included), and thoroughly researched information regarding Floyd connections of Virginia's Eastern Shore as well as the Virginia-Kentucky Floyds, see the compiled genealogy of Maj. Gen. Pat M. Stevens IV, USA, Ret., on Rootsweb:

The following chronicle contains a genealogy of the FLOYD families as they connect to the Eastern Shore of Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia:

JOHN FLOYD may have been born in Wales; parents unknown.  Married MARY,maiden name unknown.   There are no legal documents that list her maiden name.  In Northampton County, Virginia, Land Certificates were issued to those settling land there: "At court holden 30th July 1660, a certificate is granted to Mr. John Wilcocks for ye transportation of 20 persons into this County whose names follow (1000 acres)" ~John Flfoyd [sic] was among the twenty (VA Magazine of History & Biography, Vol. XXVIII, No. 2, Apr. 1920).  In August 1666, John Floyd was on the "List of Tithables" in Northampton County (VA Magazine of History & Biography, Vol. X, No. 3, Jan. 1902).   In 1668, John Floyd was granted land in Northampton County, Virginia.  In 1681 & 1687, he received patents for land on Hogg Island; again in 1687 for land on Prout's Island.  On 02 April 1687, John Floyd/LLoyd/FFloyd, made his Will (Northampton Co., VA, Order Bk. 12 - Wills 1683-1689 Vol. XV p. 294-295; this citation stands - exactly as I read it at the Eastville Courthouse): "In the name of God Amen ... I John Ffloyd of the County of Northampton being sick in body but of perfect mind and memory calling to mind the uncertain Estate of this transitory life and that all flesh must yield unto death when it shall please God to call ...  I bequeath unto my loving wife Mary two feather bedds and bolsters and what furniture there is ..."  He devised to Mary life use of one-third of the plantation, and she was co-executor with son John.  He further stipulated that the remainder of his estate be divided equally among his widow, Mary, and his six children (John or John Jr., Charles, Berry, Matthew,Sarah, Esther - in the order they are listed in the Will):

1. JOHN FLOYD  probably born in Northampton Co., VA, the first son of John Floyd & Mary .  Although it is not written on any record as such, some refer to him as John Floyd Jr. or John Floyd II (Files of Brice M. Clagett, Washington, DC). {Probably} married ANNE (maiden name unknown).  In 1687, he, along with his mother, was named co-executor of his father's Will; he inherited his father's plantation, "and all houses, Orchards & profits thereunto belonging containing one hundred acres to him and his heirs forever ... and one Sett of Coopers Tools and all the Carpenters Tools that I have I give unto John ... "; and he inherited land on Prout's Island. NOTE:  Prout's Island is not on current Northampton Co. maps as it was washed away by severe storms.  In Virginia's Eastern Shore, Ralph T. Whitelaw wrote: "Storms cut a channel through the upper part of the Island and the north part thus cut off became Prout's Island, while the remainder was called Cobb's Island.  The former is now entirely gone."  An Inventory for his own estate was filed on 14 November 1738 in Northampton Co., VA, naming his wife, Anne "relict to the dec'd." as administratrix - (no kids mentioned).

2. CHARLES FLOYD probably born in Northampton County, VA, was the second son of John Floyd & Mary.  Married ELIZABETH(maiden name unknown).  She died ca. 1720.  In 1687, he inherited a portion of property on Hog/Hogg Island from his father's estate.  He also owned land on Prout Island.  In January 1710 and again in 1714-1718, he represented Accomack County in the House of Burgesses at Williamsburg in the Virginia Assembly.  In his Will on 15 December 1718/9 & proved the 17th day ----- 1719 (Northampton Co., VA, Deeds & Wills 1718-1725 Vol. XXIII-R p. 2-3; this citation stands - exactly as I read it at the Eastville Courthouse), he named his wife, Elizabeth, and seven or eight children (John, James, Matthew, Sarah,Mary Hester or Mary and Hester, Elizabeth, Samuel - in the order they are listed in the Will):

-----1. JOHN FLOYD In 1719, he rec. his father's plantation in Northampton Co., VA.  On 21 June 1720 he was granted administrator of his mother's estate: "On behalf of himself and the rest of his brethren."  NOTE:  If this was the John Floyd who married ANNE (maiden name unknown), and the inventory filed on 14 November 1738 in Northampton Co., VA, was for his estate - this means he prob. died at a calculated age of 38.  (See John Floyd Jr. above! ).
