ELIZABETH JOHNSON

Cherokee Johnson and Betsy Douglas' daughter Elizabeth, born on April 22, 1854, in 1874, married Stephen F. Osteen. Stephen was born in Nassau County, Florida, in October 1854, son of Zekiel Osteen and Hester Murhee Wainwright. Zekiel Osteen was born in Traders Hill, western Camden County (currently Charlton County), Georgia, in 1818. Hester Murhee Wainwright was born in Georgia, in 1816. By the middle 1800s, Zekiel Osteen and Hester Wainwright had developed a farm in Nassau County, Florida. Later Zekiel Osteen and Hester Wainwright moved their family to Charlton County, Georgia. Stephen's brothers and sisters included Virginia, born 1845; Mary, born in 1856; Hester, born in 1851: George F., born in 1852; Rose, born in 1852; Emarintha, born in 1858; and Leah, born in 1860. it is thought that there were other brothers and sisters who never grew to maturity. Stephen F. Osteen was the brother of Leah Osteen who married Elizabeth Johnson's brother, Alexander.

Elizabeth Johnson and Stephen Osteen made their home in Toledo, Charlton County, Georgia, where Stephen's father owned a very large and successful farm. It is thought that Stephen took over the operation of his father Zekiel's farm when he passed away in the 1870s. Stephen Osteen and Elizabeth Johnson were parents to Celia, born in 1874; Amanda "Mandy", born in 1876; Robert B., born on December 18, 1878; Alice, born in October 1879; William A., born in February 1881; Adolphus and Media, both born in July 1883; Foster S., born in November 1885; Elizabeth "Lizzie", born in November 1887; Stephen Flanders, born October 1889; Daisy, born on August 29, 1892: Ida, born in November 1893; Etta, born in October 1894; and Fitzgerald Simmons, born on September 17, 1898.

Stephen Osteen sold his farm in Charlton County and spent his latter years living in Jacksonville, Florida, where he took a job with the railroad. Elizabeth Johnson Osteen died at an early age, prior to 1920. Stephen F. Osteen died in Columbia County, Florida, in 1935. Very little is known about Stephen F. Osteen and Elizabeth Johnson's daughters Celia, born in 1874; Alice, born in 1879; Ida, born in 1893; and Ella, born in 1894.

Elizabeth Johnson and Stephen F. Osteen's daughter Amanda "Mandy", born in 1876, married a Mr. Sikes. They made their home in Jacksonville, Florida, and later in Folkston, Georgia.

Elizabeth Johnson and Stephen F. Osteen's daughter Daisy, born on August 29, 1892, was thought to have married a Mr. Sikes. Daisy Osteen died on May 7, 1974, and is buried as an Osteen in the Boones Creek Cemetery in Charlton County, Georgia.

Elizabeth Johnson and Stephen F. Osteen's daughter Elizabeth "Lizzie", born in November 1887, married a Mr. Robinson. They made their home in Tallahassee, Florida. Elizabeth and Stephen's daughter Media, born in July 1883, married Allen Z. Batten. They made their home in Jacksonville, Florida.

Elizabeth Johnson and Stephen F. Osteen's son Robert B., born on December 18, 1878, married in 1898, a young lady by the name of Ada, born in May 1882. Robert and Ada were parents to a daughter Nettie, born in 1899. Robert B. and Ada Osteen made their home in Jacksonville, Florida, where Robert worked for the City of Jacksonville. Robert B. Osteen died in Jacksonville in 1939.

Elizabeth Johnson and Stephen F. Osteen's son Adolphus "D. P.", born in July 1883, lived in Plant City, Hillsborough County, Florida, where he died in April 1957. Their son William A., born in February 1881, moved to Alabama.

Elizabeth Johnson and Stephen F. Osteen's son, Foster S., born in November 1885, married a Julia M. and made Jacksonville their home. It is thought that they had a son Robert who was living with them in 1954.

Elizabeth Johnson and Stephen F. Osteen's son Fitzgerald Simmons, born on September 17, 1898, married Cora R. They made Jacksonville their home where Fitzgerald worked with the City Health Department. Fitzgerald and Cora became parents to four daughters and four sons. Cora died in Jacksonville in 1942. In 1943 Fitzgerald married a Mary Ellen. Mary had been married previously and had four children by her first marriage. Fitzgerald Simmons Osteen died on October 11, 1944, and is buried in Boones Creek Cemetery in Charlton County, Georgia. The following is a copy of Fitzgerald's obituary that appeared in the Thursday, October 12, 1944, edition of TheFloridaTimesUnion, a Jacksonville, Florida newspaper.

    OSTEEN — Fitzgerald Osteen, 46, of 3647 Roselle Street, died yesterday morning at a local hospital after a brief illness. He was a native of Charlton County, Georgia, and came from St, George, Georgia, to this city about 32 years ago. He was an employee of the Jacksonville Health Department. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Ellen Osteen, four daughters, Mrs. Herbert Hogan, Atlanta, Georgia, Mrs. S. G. Love, Mrs. H. J. Owens and Miss Colleen Osteen all of this city; four sons, F. G. and Gerald Osteen, both of the U. S. Army, Abrel and Lamar Osteen of this city; four sisters, Mrs. E. S. Robinson, Perry, Mrs. Amanda Sikes, Jacksonville, Miss Daisy Sikes, Moniac, Georgia, Mrs. Allen Batten, Jacksonville; four brothers, W. A. Osteen, Laurel Hill, D. P. Osteen, Plant City, S. F. and F. S. Osteen, both of Jacksonville, and four step-children. The body was placed in the care of the Seashole Funeral Parlors and arrangements will be announced later.

Elizabeth Johnson and Stephen F. Osteen's son Stephen Flanders, born October 1889, married Ruth E. and they became parents to Henry S. and Ernest E. in Jacksonville, Florida. Stephen and Ruth Osteen moved their family to Jacksonville in 1914, where he was employed as a switchman for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. Stephen Flanders Osteen died on January 6, 1954, and is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Jacksonville. The following is a copy of Stephen's obituary that appeared in the Tuesday, January 8, 1954, edition of TheFloridaTimesUnion, a Jacksonville, Florida newspaper.

    OSTEEN SERVICES SLATED TOMORROW
    Funeral services for Stephen F. Osteen, 2351 Kings Rd., will be held at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow in Estes Krauss Funeral Home. The Rev. B. C. Jones, pastor of Grand Park First Baptist Church will officiate and burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Graveside rites will be in charge of officers and members of Florida Lodge 624, Order of Railway Trainmen. Mr. Osteen was a retired Atlantic Coast Line Railway employee.

Mr. Osteen died at his home Sunday following a long illness. A native of Georgia, Mr. Osteen had resided in this city for 40 years and was a member of the Grand Park First Baptist Church and Florida Lodge 624, Order of Railway Trainmen. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruth E. Osteen; two sons, Corp. Henry S. Osteen, serving with the Army in Korea and Ernest E. Osteen of Jacksonville; five sisters, Mrs. Media Batten, this city, Mrs. E. S. Robinson, Perry, Miss Daisy Osteen, Callahan, Mrs. Mandy Sikes, Folkston, and Mrs. Lizzie Robinson, Tallahassee; and three brothers, Foster S. Osteen, Jacksonville, D. P. Osteen, Plant City, and W. A. Osteen, a resident of Alabama.
