| MARTHA JOHNSON (Page 118-157) Cherokee Johnson and Betsy Douglas' daughter Martha, born in July 1848, in 1867 married James William Geiger, Jr., in Nassau County. James Geiger, Jr. was born in 1840 in Georgia to Martha and James William Geiger. Mother Martha Geiger was born in 1818 and father James Geiger in 1808, both in Georgia. The Geiger and Johnson families were
close neighbors in western Nassau County, Florida. Much of the following history of the Geiger family has been gleamed from the book, The Geiger Family Tree of Nassau County, Florida, authored by Joye Geiger Fowler. In the early part of the eighteenth century, three brothers, John, Abraham and Herman Geiger, with their families, migrated from their homeland, Austria, to England, and eventually to Charles-Town, South Carolina. In 1734 the families moved and
established their homes in Ebenezer, Georgia. The Geigers of Nassau County are the descendants of the brother Abraham, born on March 4, 1690. Abraham Geiger married a lady by the name of Barnhardt and they became parents to a son Ulrich Geiger, born on May 14, 1729, among others. Father Abraham Geiger died on May 7, 1766. Ulrich Geiger married Apolina Seckinger, born in 1737, and they became parents to Abraham, born about 1758; Christian, born about 1760; Felix, born September 30, 1763, and
died on February 17, 1827; John, born about 1765; Rachel, born in February 1769; Mary, born about 1771; and Cornelius, born on February 1, 1774. Many of the Germanic colonists, the Geiger family included, wanted to lose any identification with their home countries as the British government had hired many Hessian soldiers to fight the colonists in the Revolutionary War. Most of the Geiger family members changed the pronunciation of their name from the Germanic
"Guy-ger" to the Americanized pronunciation "Gig-ger." Ulrich Geiger served in the Colonial Army during the American Revolution and was thought to have died on June 12, 1777, of wounds received while fighting, presumably as a colonist against the British. Ulrich Geiger and Apolina Seckinger's oldest son, Abraham, the direct line ancestor of the Geigers of Nassau County, served in the Colonial Army during the war. Abraham Geiger
married Mercy Martin and they became parents to twelve children including Cornelius; Ephraim; Nathan; Jeremiah; David, born in 1795; Samuel, born in 1796; Abraham, born in 1801; Elizabeth, born in 1803: John; James William, born in 1808; Jessie; and Joshua, born in 1810. Abraham Geiger and Mercy Martin's son, James William, married Martha, born in 1818 in Georgia. James and Martha Geiger established their family home near the St. Marys River in western Nassau County,
Florida, some time prior to 1840. James Geiger was an early pioneer of Nassau County who suffered the hardships associated with the wilderness and marauding Indians to establish a foothold in the newly acquired Spanish Florida Territory. Armed with their strong pioneer spirit, tenacity and perseverance, James and Martha Geiger, with the help of their children, tamed more and more of the wilderness to become very large landowners. By 1860, the Geiger families amassed several slaves to cut
timber and collect pinesap for the production of turpentine that was shipped down the St. Marys River to Fernandina Beach for export. At one time the Geiger families owned more than sixteen sections of land in western Nassau County. James and Martha Geiger became parents to Anna, born in 1839; James William, Jr., born in 1840, Martha, born on January 8, 1842; Thomas, born in 1848; Hannah, born in 1852: John; and Francis S., born in 1858. Mother Martha Geiger died in the early 1860s and is
buried in the Johnson/Tomlinson Cemetery in Hilliard. Father James Geiger then married Hannah Sapp, born in 1822, in Georgia. Father James Geiger and Hannah Sapp had one child, Allie E., born in 1868, in Nassau County. James Geiger, Sr., who died in the 1870s, is buried with Martha in the Johnson/Tomlinson Cemetery, located on Tomlinson Road in western Nassau County. Hannah Sapp Geiger died some years later and is buried in the Kingsferry Cemetery in Kingsferry, Nassau County, Florida. James and Martha Geiger's son, who later became the husband of Martha Johnson, James William, Jr., born in 1840, enlisted in the Confederate Army on May 16, 1862, in East Florida and was assigned to Company K, 2nd Florida Cavalry. On December 1, 1863, James transferred to Company G, 5th Florida Cavalry. Except for these units of Cavalry, the Florida Confederate Army units had been assigned to the Northern Army of Virginia and served in the Virginia Campaign. The small force of Florida Cavalry operated throughout Florida using a tactic of hit and run skirmishes on the Union forces. Union forces were kept at bay, never knowing when the Confederate Cavalry units would strike again. For this reason the Federal troops never gained dominion over Florida.
The Federals made one major attempt to control inland Florida. In February 1864, a large Union force from Jacksonville marched on Lake City. The Florida inland was for the most part unprotected since most of Florida's Confederate forces had been sent north for duty with the Army of Virginia. The few remaining Confederate forces in Florida were composed primarily of Cavalry units. James Geiger was a trooper in one of these units. Confederate forces from Georgia, consisting
of two infantry units and one cavalry unit, reinforced the small Florida Confederate contingent. Union forces challenged the defending Confederates who had chosen to make their stand at Olustee Station, located about three miles east of Lake City. Olustee Station was a stop on the railroad line, which ran from Lake City to Jacksonville. On February 20, 1864, The Federal troops attacked the combined Confederate forces of about 5,200 men. The defending Confederates met the
attack with great ferocity and determination. This encounter, the Battle of Olustee, resulted in a stunning defeat for the Union forces by the outnumbered Confederate troops. The Federal troops were routed, turned and ran with the Confederate Cavalry in hot pursuit, slashing the retreating foe with their sabers. The carnage was so great that a Confederate General ordered a halt to any further pursuit only to be reprimanded later for his order. Those Federal troops who survived the Battle of
Olustee made a hasty retreat to Jacksonville and later were withdrawn for service in the north. The Confederate troops from Georgia returned home for duty in the defense of Georgia from the invading Union forces under the command of General Sherman. Cavalry trooper James W. Geiger was one of those who rode with the Confederate Army and its victory over the Union forces at the Battle of Olustee. With the capitulation of the Confederate States of America, Trooper James W.
Geiger, Jr. surrendered and was paroled at Lake City, Florida, on May 18, 1865. He was transported to Jacksonville, arriving there on May 28, 1865. James W. Geiger, Jr., after the war, returned to his home in western Nassau County and shortly thereafter married Martha Johnson. James Geiger, Jr. and Martha Johnson developed a large and successful farm in western Nassau County where they made their home. James and Martha were parents to Thomas, born in 1865; Henry, born in
1868; John G., born February 15, 1869; Julia G., born November 15, 1871; James William, III, born in March 1873; Frank Samuel, born July 26, 1875; Shellie A., born February 15, 1878; Augustus, born in 1877; George Harris, born December 23, 1879; Henry, born September 7, 1881; Albertie "Bertie" Alwishes, born September 23, 1884; and Martha "Mattie", born in May 1887.
