William Johns was born in 1844 in what was then Camden County, Georgia. He was the son of Sarah, born in 1824, in Georgia, and John Johns, born in 1808, in South Carolina. John Johns had established a home in Charlton County for
his family where he developed a large farm. William J. Johns' siblings included Martha M., born in 1841: Elizabeth, born in 1849, Mary, born in 1851; Nancy, born in 1853; Sarah J., born in 1855; Julia, born in 1858; James, born in 1861; and Leila, born in 1863. William Johns and Sarah Johnson made their home in Charlton County where William was a farmer like his father. Sarah Johnson and William J. Johns were parents to Sarah "Elizabeth", born on November 25,
1869, in Charlton County, and Luly Green, born on August 8, 1871, in Nassau County. William J. Johns died about 1872, leaving Sarah Johnson Johns with two babies to rear. Sarah Johnson Johns and her two infants, after her husband William died, lived with her mother and father in Nassau County. After a few years as a widow, on January 4, 1880, Sarah Johnson Johns married Lewis T. Hall, born about 1857, in Georgia. Following her marriage to Lewis T. Hall, Sarah and William
J. Johns' daughter Sarah Elizabeth Johns continued to live with Sarah's parents in Nassau County. Sarah and William J. Johns' son Luly Green Johns lived with his mother Sarah and stepfather, Lewis T. Hall in Nassau County. Sarah Johnson and Lewis T. Hall made their home in Hilliard, Nassau County, where they became parents to Margaret "Maggie," born in 1881, and Grace "Grade", born on May 8, 1894. Their daughter Gracie died as a child on December 25,
1902, and is buried in Mill Creek Cemetery in Nassau County. Shortly after 1910, the family moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where about 1911 Sarah Johnson Hall died. Lewis T. Hall died on July 16, 1915, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Jacksonville. 1890, Elias Fouraker, born on December 31, 1855. Sarah and William made their home in Nassau County. Elias Fouraker was the son of Nathan Fouraker, born in 1818, and Lucy Padgett, born in 1827. Elias' siblings included Aaron, born in 1848; Thomas J., born in 1862; Nathan, Jr., born in 1850; Kate, born in 1852: Mary, born in 1863; Lee, born in 1865; and Stephen, born in 1868. Father Nathan Fouraker died on January 1, 1906, and mother Lucy Padgett Fouraker on December 17,
1895. They are both buried in the Brandy Branch Cemetery in Nassau County. Elias Fouraker, prior to marrying Sarah Elizabeth Johns, had been married to Mary F. White, born on May 20, 1861. Mary F. White died on March 15, 1889, a few years after her marriage to Elias Fouraker, and is buried in the Brandy Branch Cemetery. Elias Fouraker and Mary White were parents to Georgia E.; Lillie, born in 1878; Harold E.; Stephen Vasco, born in October 1880; and William C., born on
January 24, 1884. Elias Fouraker and Mary White's son William C. died on February 9, 1914, and is buried in Brandy Branch Cemetery. Elias Fouraker and Mary White's daughter Georgia E. married Julian A. Hoffman. Elias Fouraker and Mary White's daughter Lillie married C. Higginbotham. Elias Fouraker and Mary White's sons, Harold E. and Stephen Vasco, and all their daughters made Jacksonville their home. While living in Nassau County, Elias Fouraker and Sarah
"Elizabeth" Johns, became parents to Mabel M., born in June 1892, and Edwin, born in October 1894. Elias and Elizabeth, after the turn of the century, moved their family from Nassau County to Baldwin, Florida. In 1906 the family moved to Jacksonville where Elias was employed with the City Park Department. Elias and Elizabeth's son Edwin made Jacksonville his home. Elias and Elizabeth's daughter Mabel M. married William E. Bence and they made Jacksonville their home. Sarah "Elizabeth" Johns Fouraker died on October 11, 1939, and is buried in the Brandy Branch Cemetery in Nassau County, Florida. — Mrs. Elizabeth Fouraker, 69, of 445 Belfort Street, died in a local hospital early Wednesday after a brief illness. Mrs. Fouraker was a native of Nassau County, moving to Jacksonville 32 years ago. She leaves a host of friends who will learn with regret of her death. She was a member of the Woodlawn Baptist Church. Survivors are her widower, Elias Fouraker; three daughters, Mrs. C. Higginbotham, Mrs. W. E. Bence and Mrs. J. A. Hoffman; three sons, Vasco, Edwin and Harold Fouraker; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Wilson, all of Jacksonville. Funeral services will be held in the memorial chapel of the Seashole Funeral Parlors at 1 P.M. today with the Rev. J. W. Senterfitt officiating. Pallbearers will be W. H. Edmondson, J. H. Gwynes, F. A. Harrelson, H. H. Bryant, Fred Jones and David Hogg. Interment will be in the Brandy Branch Cemetery.
After Elizabeth died, Elias Fouraker went to live temporarily with his daughter Georgia E., wife of Julian A. Hoffman. Five weeks later on November 14, 1939, Elias died. Elias is buried with his wife Elizabeth in the Brandy Branch Cemetery. — Funeral services for Elias Fouraker, 83, of 445 Belfort Street, who died Tuesday night at 102 Mott Street, will be held Friday at 10 A.M. in the chapel of Key-McCabe Funeral Home with the Rev. J. W. Senterfitt officiating. Pallbearers will be J. H. Gwynes, H. H. Bryan, F. H. Harrelson, D. E. Hogg, F. B. Jones and C. W. Carson. Interment will be in the Brandy Branch Cemetery, near Baldwin. Mr. Fouraker was a native of Nassau County, Florida, and came to Jacksonville 33 years ago from Baldwin, Florida. For many years he was connected with the City Park Department, retiring several years ago. He was a member of the Woodlawn Baptist Church. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. W. E. Bence, Mrs. J. A. Hoffman and Mrs. C. Higginbotham; three sons, Vasco, H. E. and Edwin Fouraker, all of Jacksonville, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Ward of Miami.
Margaret"Maggie"Hall Sarah Johnson and Lewis T. Hall's daughter Margaret "Maggie", born in 1881, married Oliver E. Wilson on December 25, 1917. Maggie and Oliver made their home in Jacksonville where Oliver was employed as a salesman and later as an insurance agent. Maggie was employed as a seamstress and dressmaker. It is thought that Oliver and Maggie had no children. Oliver E. Wilson died in 1937 and is probably
buried in Brandy Branch Cemetery in Nassau County. After Oliver's death, Maggie went to live with Georgia E. Fouraker, Maggie's niece by marriage, daughter of Elias Fouraker. At the time Georgia was married to Julian A. Hoffman. After a few years Maggie established a home of her own where she lived until 1963. Luly Green, born August 8, 1881, was a logger in 1900, living in Nassau County with his uncle and aunt, Andrew and Texas Johnson. In 1904, Luly Green Johns married Mary "Stella" E. Motes, born on March 6, 1886, daughter of George and Vina J. Motes of Nassau County. Stella's mother Vina was born in December 1866 and her father George was born in November 1857, both in Florida. Stella's siblings included William B., born in July 1882; Emma V., born in September 1883; and Georgia F.,
born in January 1893. Luly Green Johns and Mary "Stella" E. Motes made their home in Nassau County where they became parents to William A. "Bill", born on January 22, 1910: Luly Green, Jr., born on December 1, 1924; Lester C.; W. E. "Jack"; Geneva; Marie; Louise; and Geraldine. Luly and Stella's daughter Geneva never married. Their other daughters all married; Marie married a Mr. Parker; Louise married T. K. Bivins; and Geraldine married
Edward G. Lindsay. Father Luly Green Johns died on July 8, 1929, and is buried in the Brandy Branch Cemetery. After Luly's death his wife Stella moved to Jacksonville where most of her children had made their homes. Mary "Stella" E. Motes Johns lived many more years and died on March 14, 1966. — Funeral services for Mrs. Stella E. Johns, 80, widow of Luly G. Johns, will be held at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Giddens-Griffith Southwest Funeral Home, 4696 Lexington Avenue, with the Rev. W. M. Rigel, pastor of the McDuff Avenue Church of God, Dr. W. E. Dowell, pastor of the Beaver Avenue Baptist Church and the Rev. W. 0. Moon officiating. Burial will be in the Brandy Branch Cemetery. Mrs. Johns, who lived at 3029 Hunt Street, died Monday morning in a Jacksonville hospital. She was born in Nassau County and had lived in Jacksonville since 1930. She was a member of the Brandy Branch Baptist Church. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Marie Parker, Mrs. T. K. Bivins, and Mrs. E. G. Lindsay, all of Jacksonville, Miss Geneva Johns of Waycross; four sons, W. E. (Jack), W. A., L. G. and Lester C. Johns, all of Jacksonville; a sister Georgia Hicks of Bryceville; 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Hayard Hodges, Jack Clements, Estel! Motes, Roy Motes, D. B. Hicks and Donald Carter. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. F. H. Schnauss, the Rev. J. F. McCormick, Jessie Hodges, Alvin Chester, Lacy Thomas and S. E. Harvey.
Luly Green Johns and Stella Motes' son Bill, born on January 22, 1910, died on October 1, 1976. Their son Luly, Jr., born on December 1, 1924, died on January 22, 1984. Both sons are buried with their father and mother in the Brandy Branch Cemetery. This Chapter: |
