| WILLIAM WARREN JOHNSON (Pages 169-184) Cherokee Johnson and Betsy Douglas' oldest son William Warren, born November 6, 1846, was his father's right-hand man and did much in the development of the Johnson homestead. When the War Between the States broke out, William felt the need to serve. He enlisted on January 16, 1862, in Company D of the 10th Florida Infantry of the Confederate Army. He was underage and lied about his age, claiming to have been born in 1844. His secret was discovered and on March 5, 1863, because of his youthfulness, he was discharged. William returned to the family farm in Nassau County and assisted his father.
William Johnson married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Tomlinson on November 18, 1870. The Deputy Nassau County Clerk, J. W. Lewis, performed the ceremony at Spring Branch in Nassau County. Elizabeth was born February 2, 1847, in Columbia County, Florida, daughter of Levin Tomlinson and Sarah Daugharty. The story of the Tomlinson family is the subject of Chapter Three.  |

William and Lizzie became parents to thirteen children, with only eight living in 1910, Their children included Pency, born on Octobers, 1872; Emily, born in April 1874; Albert Lee, born in 1875; Lee Annie, born on
April 2, 1876; Martha, born on December 13, 1877; J. Walter, born on February 18, 1880: Nora, born on June 1, 1881; Vinton K., born on September 18, 1882; Eloise "Ella", born August 21, 1884; David E., born on July 18, 1886: Nettie, born on September 24, 1888; Warren William, born on December 22, 1889; and a child who died at birth. William was a very successful farmer and logger in Kent. He became very well known
and a highly respected citizen of Nassau County. William died on April 9, 1922. JOHNSON DIES Callahan, April10. — William Johnson, a respected and esteemed resident of Kent died yesterday very unexpectedly. He had been in declining health for
some weeks but was able to get around and was in church when the end came suddenly. He was seventy-five years old. He united with the Baptist Church at Kent about six months ago. A sorrowing widow survives and the following children: David, Vinton, and Warren of Kent: Mrs. Joseph Sutton, Kent: Mrs. Annie Mozo, South Florida; Mrs. Ella Griffin, Kent; Mrs. Emily Johns, Kent. Funeral was held this afternoon from the home of the deceased. A large number
assembled to pay their last tribute of respect to one who was universally esteemed. An impressive service was conducted by his pastor, Rev. C. E. Sounders. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful. Internment was made at the Little Cemetery.
William Johnson is buried in the Higginbotham/Little Cemetery, in western Nassau County. The Higginbotham/Little Cemetery is located approximately a quarter-mile east
of the intersection of Route 108 and the Rowe Cutoff. The cemetery is about two hundred yards off the north side of the road. Lizzie Tomlinson died in 1939 and is thought to be interred with her husband William. William and Lizzie's sons J. Walter and Albert Lee and their daughter Nettie died as young children. Pency Johnson and Joseph Sutton became parents to Velma, born in 1901; Emily, born in 1902; Joseph C., born in 1904; Carey, born in 1905; Maude, born in 1906; Mattie Lee, born in 1908; Jennie A., born in 1910; Eva, born in 1911; Ruby, born in
1913; Henry, born in 1917; and two infants who were born and died prior to 1900. Emily Johnson William Johnson and Lizzie Tomlinson's daughter Emily, born in April 1874, married Andrew Franklin "Frank" Johns, born in 1873, in Nassau (bounty, Florida. Emily Johnson and Frank Johns made their home in Nassau County where they became parents to Cecil L, born in 1904; Pency, born in 1907; Willie Mae, born in 1909;
Donald, born in 1912: and Florence, born in 1916. About 1926 Frank and Emily moved to Jacksonville where their sons and daughters Cecil, Donald, Pency and Florence had established homes. Andrew Franklin Johns died in 1931 and is thought to be buried in the Higginbotham/Little Cemetery in Nassau County. JOHNS— Mrs. Emily Johns, 88, who lived at 1628 Landon Avenue died Thursday at a local hospital. Mrs. Johns was born in Callahan and had lived in Jacksonville 35 years coming here from Callahan. She was a member of the
Southside Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Donald Johns of Jacksonville; three daughters, Mrs. Pency Hoober of Jacksonville, Mrs. Willie Mae Maxwell of Pensacola, and Mrs. Florence Williams of Jacksonville; and a sister, Annie Mozo of Chiefland. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Robert M. Naugle Chapel, 1203 Hendricks Ave. with Dr. Malcolm B. Knight, pastor of the Southside Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in the Little
Cemetery, Nassau County. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Donald Johns, Richard Johns, Jim Ed Williams, Philip Sheridan, Richard Maxwell and Russell Maxwell.
Frank Johns and Emily Johnson's daughter Pency married W. G. Hoober. Frank and Emily's daughter Florence married J. E. Williams of Mandarin, Florida and became parents to a son Jim Ed. Frank Johns and Emily Johnson's son Cecil L. never married.
Cecil held many odd jobs in Jacksonville including a filling station attendant, painter, grocer and electrician. Cecil L. Johns died April 25, 1953. Frank Johns and Emily Johnson's daughter Willie Mae married Percy Maxwell of Tallahassee. Willie Mae and Percy made their home in Pensacola, Florida and were parents to two sons, Richard and Russell. Frank Johns and Emily Johnson's son Donald, about 1943, married Gladys and they became parents to two sons, Donald, Jr. and Richard. Donald and
Gladys made their home in Jacksonville where Donald was a painter, later worked for the Ford Lumber Company and latter still, as a signalman for the Florida East Coast Railroad. Donald Johns died January 16, 1974, and is buried in the Higginbotham/Little Cemetery. Lee Annie Johnson William Johnson and Lizzie Tomlinson's daughter Lee Annie, born on April 2, 1876, married William Brantley Mozo, born March 21, 1876. Annie Lee Johnson and William
Mozo lived in Nassau County where they became parents to four children. One of their children, Dorsey Andrew, born on June 6, 1904, died on April 17, 1905, and is buried in the Higginbotham/Little Cemetery in Nassau County. Later the family moved to Sumner, Florida, where William became very prominent in the lumber business. MOZO DIED AFTER A BRIEF ILLNESS News has been received here of the death on last Wednesday of W. B. Mozo, a prominent lumberman of Sumner. The deceased was only ill a short time and his death came as a great shock to his family and friends.
Besides his wife and children, the deceased is survived by three sisters, Mrs. B. B. MacDonell, of Jacksonville; Mrs. Robert Henson, of Dania, Florida; and Mrs. T. C. Hunt, of Macon, Georgia; and three brothers, R. P. Mozo, G. C. Mozo, of St. Louis; and Herman Mozo of Camp Greenleaf.
Later Annie Lee Johnson was thought to have remarried and moved to Fort Lauderdale in south Florida where she was living in 1948. In 1956 she was located in Fort Pierce,
Florida and in the early 1960s she was living in Chiefland. Martha Johnson William Johnson and Lizzie Tomlinson's daughter Martha, born on December 13, 1877, married John C. Pickett, born in Florida in 1877. John's parents were Henry C. Picket, born in February 1845, and Emily, born in April 1855, both in Florida. John
C. Pickett's siblings included Desdemona, born in 1875: Lewis, born in March 1879; Henry, born in January 1882; Lena, born in May 1887; Martha, born in April 1889; Grace, born in September 1892; and Willie, born in December 1896. Martha Johnson and John Pickett made their home in Nassau County where they became parents to four children. Martha Johnson died at an early age, prior to 1910. John Pickett, a
carpenter, moved to Jacksonville where he married Alice, born in 1883 in Florida. John and Alice Pickett were parents to a daughter Lois, born in 1919. Nora Johnson William Johnson and Lizzie Tomlinson's daughter Nora, born on June 1, 1881, about 1899, married Joseph B. Pittman, born in January 1874, in Georgia. Joseph was the only child of Sarah Pittman, born in December 1846 in Georgia. Joseph Pittman was a
section foreman for the railroad. Nora Johnson and Joseph Pittman lived in Nassau County where they became parents to Roy C., born in 1901; Warren W., born in 1903; Johnson Guy, born on September 15, 1906; Carrie B., born in 1908; Everett Scott, born in 1909; David, born in 1912; Joseph, born in 1914; Elizabeth, born in 1916; and Arnold J., born in 1917. Nora Johnson Pittman died on September 23, 1917, and is buried in the
Higginbotham/Little Cemetery. Nora death left Joseph with Arnold J., their newborn son. Joseph could not provide for the baby so Nora Johnson's brother Davis Edee Johnson and his wife Stella "Mattie" Green adopted him. Nora Johnson and Joseph Pittman's son Johnson Guy Pittman, born on September 15, 1906, died on September 30, 1990, and is interred in the Higginbotham/Little Cemetery. David Edee Johnson

In 1917, David Johnson and Mattie Green, as a newly married couple, adopted the newborn son, Arnold J., of David's dead sister Nora Johnson and her husband Joseph Pittman. David Johnson and Mattie Green made their home in Nassau County where they became parents to David Charles, born in 1920; Wesley
Lee; William M., born on August 4, 1924; Margaret "Peggy": and Ella Louise, born in 1928. Stella "Mattie" Green died on July 20, 1935, and is buried in the Conner/Green Cemetery, located in western Nassau County. Vinton Johnson and Mattie Braddock's daughter Dora Johnson died at the age of five. Their daughter Audry Johnson died at the age of three. Vinton and Mattie's son Phoebus married Rebecca L. born on August 3, 1918. Phoebus and Rebecca Johnson
made their home in Callahan. Phoebus Johnson died on October 26, 1973, and is buried in the Jones Cemetery in Callahan. Vinton Johnson and Mattie Braddock's sons Frazier, Cyrus and Luther all married and made their family homes in Jacksonville. Luther Johnson died on March 31, 1967, and is buried in the Higginbotham/Little Cemetery. 1884, married Forest Edgar Griffin, born on April 27, 1883, in Parraway, South Carolina. Forest was the son of Agnes E. Griffin, born in 1861 in South Carolina. Ella Johnson and Forest Griffin lived for a short time in Charlton County, Georgia. In 1918 the family moved to Jacksonville where Forest worked for the Florida East Coast Railroad. Ella Johnson and Forest Griffin were parents to Alma H. and Agnes Naomi, born on January
