MOSES TOMLINSON
(Pages 238-241)

While living in Lowndes County, John and Rebecca Tomlinson's son Moses and his wife Lottie Monk increased their family with the births of Nancy, born in 1824; Sherod, born on February 6, 1826; Thomas, born on June 26, 1828; Rebecca, born in 1831; Enoch, born on August 16, 1833; Neeham, born in 1837: and Joseph, born in 1839. Moses Tomlinson served as a private in the Indian Wars. He was mustered in on November 1, 1839, at Alapaha, Georgia, and discharged at Fort Gilmer (near Fargo), December 31, 1839. He also served in Captain John J. Johnson's company of the Florida Militia from November 1, 1841, to December 5, 1841.

Moses Tomlinson and Lottie Monk's daughter Elizabeth, born in 1816, married Manning Smith and daughter Rebecca, born in 1831, married Henry Joyce, Jr. Their daughter Martha, born in 1821, married Martin Fender and their daughter Nancy, born in 1824, married Jesse Smith.

Lucretia Tomlinson

Moses Tomlinson and Lottie Monk's daughter Lucretia, born in 1815, married Jonas Driggers, born in 1815. Jonas was the son of William Driggers and Millie Lastinger Parker. William Driggers was born in South Carolina in 1774, the son of a Revolutionary War soldier. He came to Effingham County, now Bulloch County, Georgia, as a boy about 1788. It was here that he grew up and married Mrs. Millie Parker on November 3, 1806. Millie Lastinger Parker, daughter of John Lastinger, was born in 1784 in Bulloch County. William Driggers and Millie Lastinger Parker reared a large family of fifteen children. William and Millie made their home on the eastern side of the Alapaha River, near the present town of Stockton where the Tomlinsons had made their home. William Driggers lived to 1879 and died at the age of 103 in Florida. His mother lived to the age of 104. William Driggers and Millie Parker's daughter Rebecca Driggers married Harris Tomlinson and their daughter Emily "Millie" married Sebastian Mark Tomlinson, sons of William Tomlinson and Nancy Register. William Tomlinson was the brother of Moses Tomlinson. After their marriage Lucretia Tomlinson and Jonas Driggers moved to Florida.

Sherod Tomlinson

Moses Tomlinson and Lottie Monk's son Sherod, born on February 6, 1826, served as a private in the Indian Wars and later in 1861, he volunteered to serve in the Army of the Confederate States of America. Sherod served in Company H, 29th Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment until his discharge in 1864. Sherod in 1849 married Sarah Ann Burkhalter born in Pulaski County, Georgia on April 19, 1828, daughter of Richard H. Burkhalter. Sherod and Sarah were parents to eleven children, one son Amos B. died as a child.

Thomas Tomlinson

Moses Tomlinson and Lottie Monk's son Thomas, born on June 26, 1828, married in 1852, Mary Sirmans, born September 11, 1830, daughter of Joseph Sirmans. Joseph Sirmans was born in 1808, the son of Josiah Sirmans and Harty Hardeman, sister of Rebecca Hardeman. Thomas and Mary were parents to six children. Mary died on January 9, 1887 in Clinch County, Georgia. Thomas died on August 14, 1897 in Clinch County. Mary and Thomas are buried together in the Fender Cemetery in Clinch County.

Enoch Tomlinson

Moses Tomlinson and Lottie Monk's son Enoch, born on August 16, 1833, married in February 1855 Jemima Giddens, born January 31, 1835, daughter of Duncan Giddens. Enoch and Jemima Tomlinson were parents to seven children.

Aaron Tomlinson

Moses Tomlinson and Lottie Monk's son Aaron, born in 1817, served as a private in the Lowndes County Militia in the Indian Wars. Aaron also served as third lieutenant in the Army of the Confederacy in the Clinch County Militia and participated in the Battle of Atlanta in 1864. Aaron Tomlinson married Lavina Sirmans, born in 1822, daughter of Benjamin Sirmans. Aaron and Lavina Tomlinson were parents to nineteen children, eight of whom never grew to maturity. Aaron and Lavina's family moved to Sumter County, Florida, where Aaron died in 1897.

In 1862, Moses Tomlinson and Lottie Monk's sons Thomas, Enoch, Neeham and Joseph enlisted in Company G, 50TH Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the Army of the Confederate States of America. Neeham was killed in the service of the Confederate States Army. Joseph was killed at the Battle of Petersburg. Neither Neeham nor Joseph ever married. After the war Thomas and Enoch returned home to Clinch County where their father Moses and mother Lottie made their home. Charlotte "Lottie" Monk Tomlinson died in 1879 followed by Moses Tomlinson in 1891.
