| JAMES DAUGHARTY (Page 257-265) In 1823, Dempsey Daugharty and Mary "Pollie" Pearce's son James married Sarah Spivey in Appling County, Georgia. This was a short-lived marriage as Sarah died in 1825 after giving birth on March 19, 1825, to their only child, Sarah Penelope. Later that year, James married Nancy Bassett, born in 1803 in Georgia, the daughter of
Eli Bassett. James and Nancy continued to live in Appling County until 1829, when the family moved to Hamilton County, Florida. James Daugharty and Nancy Bassett became parents to seven children including John, born November 18, 1826; Elizabeth, born in 1828; Francis, born in 1830; James, born in 1833: William, born in 1836; Nancy, born in 1837; Martha, born in 1843. James Daugharty served in the Indian War from June 16, 1837, to December 18, 1837, in
Captain John J. Johnson's Company of the Second Regiment of the East Florida Militia. Until 1840, James served in many county militias. About 1840, James and Nancy Daugharty moved their family to Clinch County, Georgia. James cleared a piece of land on Suwannoochee Creek below the present town of DuPont and farmed it for a few years. Nancy Bassett Daugharty died in 1845. Following her death, James sold his holdings in Clinch County and moved to Columbia County, Florida,
where he took his last bride, Sarah J. Pease. James Daugharty and Sarah Pease were parents to Sarah Jane, born in 1848. James and Sarah's declining years were spent in Baker County, Florida, near Sanderson. James Robert Daugharty died in 1878 and is buried in an unmarked grave on the old family homestead, about seven miles east of Glen St. Mary, on property currently owned by Will Knabb. married Samuel Tumblin and later James Burnett. James and Nancy's daughter Elizabeth, born in 1828, married Gideon Burnsed. James and Nancy's daughter Nancy, born in 1837, married Ichabod Foreacres. James and Nancy's son William, born in 1836, married Charlotte Driggers. James and Nancy's son James, born in 1833, never married but was killed in action while serving in the Army of the Confederacy during the War Between the States. Francis Daugharty
James Daugharty and Nancy Bassett's son Francis, born in 1830, married in 1856, Emily Roberts, born in 1832. Francis Daugharty and Emily Roberts were parents to Nancy, George, Levin, Rhoda, James, Polly and John. The family made their home in Ware County, Georgia, moving to Columbia County, Florida in 1845. In 1859, Francis and Emily moved their family to Charlton County, Georgia and in 1866 to Clinch County, Georgia. Francis died on July 29, 1883 in Clinch County, followed by Emily in 1909.
John Daugharty James Daugharty and Nancy Bassett's son John, born on November 18, 1826, married Margaret Yelvington on April 22, 1852. Margaret was born on June 8, 1831, in Camden County, Georgia, to Gideon and Nancy Yelvington. John accompanied his parents to Columbia County, Florida, but soon after his marriage, he and his bride Margaret moved to Clinch County, Georgia, settling near the Suwannee River. While living in
Clinch County, John Daugharty and Margaret Yelvington became parents to Ichabod, born on January 18, 1853; James, born in 1855; Martha, born in 1856; Levin, born in 1858 and Margaret, born in 1859, who both died as children; John, Jr., born on September 4,1861; Jesse D., born on April 21, 1863; Nancy, born in 1865; and Sarah "Sally", born in 1867. John Daugharty served as Justice of the Peace in Clinch County from 1862 to 1866. He served as 4th Lieutenant of the
Clinch County 1st Militia Company, organized in 1864. He was commissioned March 2, 1864, and served until the end of the war. In February 1867, John and Margaret sold their holdings in Clinch County, Georgia, and moved to Volusia County, Florida. They were among the earliest settlers of the area. John and Margaret made their home in the community of Spring Garden, located a few miles northeast of the city of DeLand. They added to their family with the birth of a daughter Elizabeth in 1872.

John Daugharty became a large landowner and developed a successful cattle ranch and citrus grove. John became one of the most highly respected community leaders in Volusia County, Florida. He was very instrumental in the growth and economic development of western Volusia County.
Margaret Yelvington Daugharty died on October 6, 1897, and is buried in the Mount Olive Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, located in the community of Spring Garden, a few miles north of DeLand Florida. John Daugharty died on December 26, 1903, and is buried with his wife Margaret in the Mount Olive Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

John Daugharty and Margaret Yelvington's daughter Martha, born in 1856, married Samuel D. Peacock, born in 1852. Martha died in 1912, followed by Samuel in 1922. They are both buried in the Mount Olive Cemetery. John Daugharty and Margaret Yelvington's daughter Nancy, born in 1865, married Harry F. Lungren, born in 1860. Nancy died in 1922, and is buried in the Oakdale Cemetery
in DeLand, Florida. Harry F. Lungren died in 1943, and is buried with his wife Nancy. John Daugharty and Margaret Yelvington's daughter Sarah "Sally", born in 1867, married Merrill S. Lee, born in 1857. Merrill died in 1935, followed by Sally in 1952. They are buried in the Mount Olive Cemetery. John Daugharty and Margaret Yelvington's daughter Elizabeth, born in 1872, married
John F. Gulp, born in 1876. John died in 1946 and is buried in the Mount Olive Cemetery. Elizabeth Daugharty Gulp died in 1961, and is buried with her husband. John Daugharty and Margaret Yelvington's son Ichabod, born on January 18, 1853, married Jane "Janie" Jones, born on September 11, 1855, daughter of John and Nancy Jones of DeLeon Springs, Florida. Ichabod Daugharty and Janie Jones were parents to
four daughters. Ichabod developed a large orange grove north of DeLand, Florida. In 1905, the area experienced a devastating freeze, which destroyed Ichabod's citrus grove. After the freeze, the family moved to Daytona Beach where Ichabod was killed in an electrical accident on October 25, 1911. He is buried in the Pinewood Cemetery in Daytona Beach. Janie Jones Daugharty lived many more years and died on November 20, 1930. She is buried with her husband Ichabod. John Daugharty and Margaret Yelvington's son Jesse, born on April 21, 1863, married Grace Darling Underwood in June 1887, in Volusia County, Florida. Grace Underwood was born on April 8, 1864, in New Albany, Indiana, daughter of Captain William C. Underwood, born in 1824, and Mary Susan Key, born in 1828. Mary Key Underwood died on January 7, 1887, and Captain William C. Underwood died in 1922, both in
Volusia County. Jesse Daugharty and Grace Underwood were parents to Mable and Jesse. Grace Darling Underwood Daugharty died on September 2, 1890. Jesse Daugharty married Ida Jane McCorkle on July 15, 1893, in Palatka, Florida. Ida McCorkle was born on October 4, 1875 in Iredell County, North Carolina, daughter of Samuel Thomas McCorkle and Alice America Hopkins. Jesse Daugharty and Ida McCorkle were parents to only one child, Hazel. After the birth of their daughter, Jesse
and Ida moved to Boynton Beach, Florida, where Jesse died on June 21, 1932. Ida Jane McCorkle Daugharty died on February 28, 1964, and is buried with her husband Jesse in the Boynton Beach Cemetery. John Daugharty and Margaret Yelvington's son John, Jr., born on September 4,1861, married Nancy Florence Jones on June 17, 1886, in Volusia County, Florida. Nancy was born on April 3, 1869, in DeLeon Springs, daughter of Robert Jones and Nancy
Hires. John became very active as a cattleman, citrus grower and farmer in Spring Garden, Florida. John and Nancy were parents to three daughters and one son. John Daugharty, Jr. died on June 28, 1934, and is buried in the Mount Olive Cemetery in Spring Garden. Nancy Florence Jones Daugharty died as a result of an automobile accident on Janaury 16, 1942. Nancy is buried with her husband John in the Mount Olive Cemetery.
John Daugharty and Margaret Yelvington's son James, born in 1855, married Mathilde Andersen on March 8, 1888, in Volusia County. Mathilde, born in 1867, in Arenbal, Norway, came to this country with her sister in 1886. James Daugharty developed a very large citrus grove operation in Volusia County. James and Mathilde were parents to four sons and a daughter.

James Daugharty died in 1927 and is buried in the Mount Olive Primative Baptist Church Cemetery in Spring Garden. Mathilde Andersen Daugharty died on September 19, 1936, and is buried with her husband James in the Mount Olive Cemetery. Sarah Penelope Daugharty Sarah Penelope Daugharty was the only child of James Daugharty and his first wife,
