VIRUE CALLIE JOHNSON

Johnny J. Johnson, Jr. and Emily Tomlinson's daughter Virue Callie, born on June 11, 1906, was a minor when her father died in 1915. She lived with her mother and brothers and sisters in Milliard until her mother passed away in 1921. Virue and her older sister Sandol went to live with their Uncle A. J. Johnson, their guardian, in Fernandina Beach for a short time. Later Virue and Sandol moved to Jacksonville to find work and live with their older sisters. Their sisters, Allie, Gertrude and Lelia had earlier moved to Jacksonville to seek work and establish a home. Each of the five unmarried girls found work and lived together in their group home for a number of years. In 1928, Virue's sister Sandol married Harry G. Dahlman and Harry joined the sisters in the group home.

Virue Johnson worked for several years in Jacksonville as a packer in a coffee plant. It was in Jacksonville that Virue met and later on April 14, 1934, married Jacob "Jake" Moses Horton. Jake was born on December 24, 1886, in Hampton, South Carolina, the son of Soloman Horton, born on May 22, 1856, and Ida Gray, born in March 1858. Soloman Horton died on March 20, 1902, and is buried in the Red Hill Cemetery in Grays, South Carolina. Jake's siblings included two sisters, Alice and Janie. Jake had lived in Oveido prior to his move to Jacksonville in 1925. Previously Jake Horton had been married to Gabrielle and they were the parents of a son Soloman and a daughter Louise. This was a short-lived marriage as Jake and Gabrielle divorced.

Virue Johnson and Jake Horton in 1934 bought a house and established their home in Jacksonville where Jake was employed with the City of Jacksonville Highway Department. Virue and Jake were parents to Emily Jane, born on September 11, 1935: Marjorie Ellen, born on February 14, 1937; and John Frederick, born on June 30, 1940.

Jacob "Jake" Moses Horton died on August 1, 1949, and is buried in the Restlawn Cemetery in Jacksonville. The following is a copy of Jake's obituary that appeared in the Wednesday, August 3, 1949, edition of The FloridaTimesUnion.

    HORTON— Jacob Moses Horton, 62, of 3242 Fitzgerald Street, died at his home Monday morning. Mr. Horton was a native of Hampton, S. C. and came to Jacksonville 24 years ago from Oveido, Fla. He was an employee of the City Highway Department and a member of the Assembly of God Church. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Virue C. Horton; three daughters, Mrs. Louise Stephens, Sarasota; Miss Emily Horton and Miss Marjorie Horton, both of Jacksonville; and two sons, Sol and John Horton both of Jacksonville; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Best, Savannah, Ga. and Mrs. Janie Wilder, Aynor, S. C.; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 P. M. today in the Chapel of Key-McCabe Funeral Home with the Rev. Waynn Pitts officiating. Pallbearers who will be active include T. K. Stocks, W. D. Sessions, P. L. Davis, F. E. McElroy, C. A. Holmes, and John Hilgerson. Members of the City Highway Department will act as honorary pallbearers. Interment will be in Restlawn Cemetery.

Virue Callie Johnson Horton died on October 3, 1963, and is buried with Jake in the Restlawn Cemetery. The following is a copy of Virue's obituary that appeared in the Saturday, October 5, 1963, edition of TheFlorida TimesUnion.

    HORTON — Funeral services for Mrs. Virue Callie Horton, 57, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Key-McCabe Funeral Home with the Rev. Clayton R. Long and the Rev. J. B. Davis officiating. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Horton, who lived at 1725 Swift St., died Thursday night in a local hospital. She was born in Milliard and had lived in Jacksonville 40 years. She was a member of the Ellis Road  Pentecostal  Holiness Church. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Emily Jane Cail of Little Rock, Ark., and Mrs. Marjorie E. Brigance of Orange Park; a son, John F. Horton, U.S. Coast Guard, Brunswick, Ga.: six sisters, Mrs. Arrie Rowe of Milliard, Mrs. Amanda Johnson of St. George, Ga., Miss Allie Johnson, Miss Lelia Johnson, Mrs. Sandol Dahlman and Mrs. Gertrude Peacock, all of Jacksonville; two grandchildren, Brenda Davis and Donald Brigance, Jr. Pallbearers will be Buddy Williams, Robert Combs, Willard Mercer, Buddy Collins, Jerry Miller and Bart Broxson.

Virue Johnson and Jake Horton's daughter Emily Jane, born on September 11, 1935, had a short-lived marriage to Hayward L. Davis. They were the parents to Brenda Diane, born on April 16, 1952, in Savannah, Georgia. Emily worked for various companies including the King Edward Cigar Company, Commercial Credit Corporation and State Farm Insurance Agencies.

On June 14, 1957, Emily married John "Jay" K. Cail in Folkston, Georgia. Jay was born on May 23, 1924, in Vero Beach, Florida. Jay and his brother Clifford were the sons of Florida natives Henry Cail of Island Grove and Alma Gore of Bassinger. Jay was reared in Fort Pierce, Florida, and served twenty-three years in the military services prior to retiring from service in January 1965. Childless, John and Emily had a State Farm Insurance Agency in Little Rock, Arkansas. Later Emily and Jay moved to Jacksonville where they have operated a very successful State Farm Insurance Agency since 1966.

Emily's daughter Brenda Diane had a short-lived marriage to Rick Burt. Brenda and Rick were parents to David, born on July 4, 1969. Later, Brenda married Larry Gillum and they became parents to Shawn, born on February 27, 1975. Larry adopted Brenda's son David so that his family name is Gillum. Emily and John make their home in Jacksonville.

Virue Johnson and Jake Horton's daughter Marjorie Ellen, born on February 14, 1937, married Donald Ray Brigance, on July 8, 1955. Donald was born on October 14, 1936, in Gushing, Oklahoma, the son of Oscar Brigance and Thelma Belva Walker.

Marjorie Horton and Donald Brigance were parents to Madonna Ann, born on September 21,1961, at the Air Force Hospital, Kendal Air Force Base, Bermuda; and Donald Ray, Jr., born on June 11, 1963, in Jacksonville, Florida. Marjorie and Donald's daughter Madonna left this world the day she was born and is buried in the Military Cemetery at the Naval Air Station at Pensacola, Florida.

Marjorie worked for several insurance companies including State Farm. Donald retired from the navy after serving for twenty years and later worked for the post office for ten years. He then took a job with the Roadway Package Systems. After undergoing surgery, Donald was partially paralyzed which has left him disabled.

Marjorie and Donald make their home in Kernersville, North Carolina. Their son Donald Ray, Jr. had a short-lived marriage to Susan Fountain. Later, Donald, Jr. married Melissa Kay Kiker, born on February 15, 1969, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Donald, Jr. and Melissa have no children. Melissa had been married previously and was the parent to two children.

Virue Johnson and Jake Horton's son John Frederick, born on June 30, 1940, married Eunice Leslie on July 7, 1961, in Jacksonville. Eunice was born on July 9, 1941, in Coffee County, Georgia, daughter of Clara Jewell Jones and William Henry Leslie. Eunice's siblings include two sisters, Louise and Mae and a brother William "Buck" Henry, Jr. John Horton and Eunice Leslie were parents to Kenneth, born in Baltimore, Maryland; Donna Michelle, born on September 19, 1966, in Jacksonville; and Emily Suzanne, born on December 12, 1971, in Baltimore, Maryland. John Horton and Eunice Leslie's son Kenneth died as an infant. John retired from the Coast Guard after twenty-three years of service. He has since been employed with American Heritage, Thomas and Associates and currently with the Carolina Casualty Company. Eunice's employers include the Commercial Credit Corporation, State Farm Insurance Company, Barnett Bank Company and the Bank of New York. John and Eunice presently make their home in Jacksonville. John Horton and Eunice Leslie's daughter Donna on June 13, 1987, married Christopher Newell Cantrell, born on May 14, 1968, in Jacksonville. Donna and Christopher are parents to Chadwick Mitchel and Sydnei Donna Krishelle. John and Eunice's daughter Emily on January 6, 1995, married Kerry Lee Morgan in Jacksonville. Emily and Kerry are parents to Callie Rachael Horton and Shirley Leeanne.
