FRANCIS CAUGHEY
(Pages 382-384)

Francis Caughey was born in 1728 and about 1750 married Jean Scott, born about 1731. Francis and Jean became parents to John, born in 1752; Elizabeth, born about 1753; Eley, born about 1754; Jean, born about 1755; and Andrew, born in 1756. In 1767, Francis Caughey bought 167 acres in Bart Township in Lancaster County and later acquired several tracts of land in Bart Township and the neighboring townships of Little Britain and Colerain.

Both the Johnsons and the Caugheys were advocates and supporters of the Church of Scotland. The early family members are thought to have helped in the development of the Middle Octorara Church. This church, located in Bart Township, was organized in 1727. Later in 1753, it was established as the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church. The church cemetery is the final resting-place for many of the early settlers of the area.

Over the years both the Johnsons and Caugheys were very active members of this church. The graves of many Johnsons can be found throughout the church cemetery. John Caughey, son of Francis, and his wife, Elizabeth, and their son, John, are buried here.
