26, 1852, in Columbia County, Florida, to Levin Tomlinson and Sarah Daugharty. The story of the Tomlinson family is the subject of Chapter Three. Harris was a farmer in Nassau County and later in Charlton County, Georgia. Harris T. Tomlinson died on July 24, 1910, and is buried in Mill Creek Cemetery in Nassau County, Florida. Following Harris' passing his son, Mark, accepted the task of
making a home for his mother, Amanda, and his sisters, Nellie and Lizzie. Amanda and Harris' children Jonathan, Hattie and Walter had married and established themselves prior to their father's death. Amanda Johnson Tomlinson died on December 28, 1920, and is buried with her husband Harris in the Mill Creek Cemetery.

Walter R. Tomlinson Amanda Johnson and Harris Tomlinson's son Walter R., born on November 5, 1878, married Martha Dyal Wingate on April 6, 1904, in Nassau County. Martha was born in April 1885 in Charlton County, Georgia, daughter of William H. and Mary E. Wingate. William was born in January 1849, and Mary in 1850, both in Florida. Martha Wingate's
siblings included Emma, born in 1870; Nathan, born in 1874; Leonard, born in 1876, and died young; Mary E., born in 1879, and died young; Scriven, born in May 1881; David L, born in July 1883; Joseph, born in 1888; Eliha, born in March 1889; and Etta A., born in 1892. Martha Wingate's mother, Mary E. Wingate, died after giving birth to Etta. In 1892, shortly after mother Mary Wingate's death, father William H. Wingate
married Mary Jane Tomlinson, born on December 14, 1861, the daughter of Levin Tomlinson and Sarah Daugharty. William H. Wingate and Mary Jane Tomlinson were parents to Sallie, born in June 1893; Frank, born in February 1895; Nora P., born in December 1897; Thomas B., born in August 1899; and Robert, born in 1904. William Wingate and Mary Jane Tomlinson's son Frank died as a child, prior to 1910. Amanda Johnson and Harris Tomlinson's son Walter R. and Martha Dyal Wingate
made their home first in Nassau County and later in Jacksonville, Florida. Walter and Martha were parents to William H., born in 1905; Andrew J., born in 1909; Edward, born in 1913; Thelma, born in 1916: Kenneth, born in 1918; and an infant who died. After 1920, Walter and Martha had two additional sons. R. L. and Paul. Walter R. Tomlinson died on February 3, 1934, and is buried in the Mill Creek
Cemetery in Nassau County. The following is a copy of Walter's obituary that appeared in the Sunday, February 4, 1934, edition of The FloridaTimesUnion, a Jacksonville, Florida Newspaper. Walter R. Tomlinson Walter R. Tomlinson, 55, of 2915 Spencer Street, died suddenly at his home yesterday. Death apparently was from a heart attack. Mr. Tomlinson was a native of Hilliard and came to Jacksonville about 22 years ago. He was a
member of the Church of the Nazarene. Mr. Tomlinson is survived by his widow, Mrs. Martha Tomlinson; a daughter, Miss Thelma Tomlinson; six sons, William, Andrew, Edward, Kenneth, Paul and R. L. Tomlinson of this city: also two sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Simms, this city, and Mrs. Nellie Sikes, Hilliard; and two brothers, Dayton and Mark Tomlinson, this city. Funeral services will be held at the Church of the Nazarene Monday at 9:30
A.M., the pastor, the Rev. Earl W. Powell, officiating. Following the services the body will be taken to Mill Creek Cemetery, near Callahan, for interment in the family plot. Arrangements are in charge of the Seashole Funeral Parlors.
Harriet "Hattie" Tomlinson Harris Tomlinson and Amanda Johnson's daughter Harriet "Hattie", born in April 1880,
married Jonathan "John" C. Colson. Jonathan was born in 1876 in Florida to Abraham H. and Sarah A. Colson, Abraham was born in 1838, and Sarah in 1842, both in Florida. John's siblings included L. Charlotte, born in 1866; Wright A., born in 1868; Elizabeth J., born in 1870; Mary A., born in 1871; Marjorie, born in 1873; Polly H., born in 1874; and Ada B., born in 1878. Hattie Tomlinson and John C. Colson made their family home in western Nassau
County. They were parents to Abraham, born in 1905, and Horace G., born in 1907. Hattie passed away shortly after giving birth to Horace, leaving Jonathan to rear their two young children. Father Abraham Colson died about the same time as Hattie. Jonathan's widowed mother then came to live with John to assist him in rearing the young boys. Jonathan "John" C. Colson died in 1957, and is buried in the Mill Creek Cemetery. Jonathan Dayton Tomlinson Harris Tomlinson and Amanda Johnson's son Jonathan Dayton, born on March 19, 1884, married Ada Belle Nelson on December 26, 1904. Ada was born in September 1895, in Florida, to Lucian "Luke" Z. and Nancy M. Nelson. Luke was born in June 24, 1856, in Florida. Nancy was born in May 31, 1867, in Georgia. Ada's siblings were all born in Florida and included John, born in July 1887; Jack, born December 1888, Willie,
born in May 1891: Pursie, born in January 1892; Bailey, born in October 1893; Lewis, born in October 1897; and Maggie, born in October 1899. Father Luke Nelson died on July 24, 1931, and is buried in the Mill Creek Cemetery. Mother Nancy Nelson passed away on March 22, 1956, and is buried with Luke. Jonathan D. Tomlinson and Ada Belle Nelson made their home in Nassau County and were parents to Jonathan, Jr., Lillie Mae, Elsie Lee, Nettie Ruth, Annie Belle, and Ray
Harry. Father Jonathan Dayton Tomlinson died on January 19, 1946. Ada Belle Nelson passed away about 1960. Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" Tomlinson Harris Tomlinson and Amanda Johnson's daughter Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie", born on July 30, 1892, married John "Rowe" Simms on December 13, 1914. Rowe Simms and Lizzie Tomlinson first made their home in Charlton County, Georgia, later moved to
Madison, Florida, and eventually Jacksonville, Florida. Rowe was employed by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company. Lizzie Tomlinson and Rowe Simms were parents to three daughters and two sons. Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" Tomlinson passed away about 1945. Rowe married a lady by the name of Louise. Louise had been married before and had children by her first husband. John Rowe Simms died on April 14, 1952, in Jacksonville, Florida. The
following is a copy of Rowe's obituary that appeared in the Tuesday, April 15, 1952, edition of The Florida Times Union, a Jacksonville, Florida newspaper. SIMMS— John Rowe Simms of Route 5, Box 585, Clayton Road passed away early Monday morning in a local hospital. Mr. Simms, a native of Georgia, came to Jacksonville from Madison, Florida. Prior to his retirement he was for 28 years
employed by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. He was a deacon in the Riverside Primitive Baptist Church and a member of the Brotherhood of Firemen and Oilers of which he was secretary until 1947. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Louise Simms; three daughters, Mrs. W. E. Ridgon, Mrs. Carroll Carter and Mrs. Bennett Daniels, this city; a step-daughter, Mrs. Eugenia Noto, in Louisiana; two sons, B. H. Simms, this city, and ____ Simms of Cornelia, Georgia; a
stepson, C. E. Foy, Norfolk, Virginia; a sister, Mrs. lva Trawick, Mayo; and 15 grandchildren. Arrangements are under the direction of Seashole Funeral Parlors.
Marquis "Mark" DeLafayette Tomlinson Harris Tomlinson and Amanda Johnson's son Marquis "Mark" DeLafayette, born on February 9, 1894, married Mildred Elizabeth "Millie" Carroll, on April 26, 1925. Millie,
born on December 24, 1910, was the daughter of John Carroll and Mary Elizabeth Crews. John Carroll was born in 1870 and Mary Crews in 1874, both in Florida. Millie's siblings included Bessie, born in 1896; Josh J., born in 1902; Jessie J., born in 1905; Herman G., born in 1907; Sampson, born in 1908; George W., born in 1909; Lennie R., born in 1911; Lottie Bell, born in 1916; and Mamin M., born in 1920. In 1920 Millie's
grandmother, Elizabeth Crews, ninety-eight years of age, born in 1822 in Georgia, was living with John and her daughter Mary. Mark Tomlinson and Millie Carroll made their home in Hilliard in Nassau County. It was here that they reared their large family of nine children. Mark Tomlinson and Millie Carroll were parents to Lillian, born May 3, 1926, Mildred, born April 22, 1928; Stella, born August 12, 1930, Ruby, born March 14, 1934; Frank,

Marquis "Mark" DeLafayette Tomlinson passed away on September 7, 1960, and is
buried in the Mill Creek Cemetery in western Nassau County, Florida. The following is a copy of Mark's obituary that appeared in the Friday, September 9, 1960, edition of The Florida Times Union, a Jacksonville, Florida Newspaper. TOMLINSON— Funeral services for Mark Lafayette Tomlinson will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Buford Grove Baptist Church, Hilliard, with the Rev. Eddie
Murrhee, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mill Creek Cemetery under the direction of S. A. Kyle, 17 West Union Street. Mr. Tomlinson of Rt. 2, Hilliard, died Wednesday at a local hospital. He was born in Georgia and had lived in Nassau County about 60 years. He was a member of the Buford Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Millie C. Tomlinson of Hilliard; seven daughters, Mrs. Lillian Freeman, Mrs. Stella Davis and Mrs. Ruby Carter, all of
Fernandina Beach, Mrs. Mildred Freeman, Mrs. Nellie Brown and Mrs. Eva Vanzant, all of Jacksonville, and Miss Delaine Tomlinson of Hilliard; two sons, Frank Tomlinson of Jacksonville and Robert Tomlinson of Hilliard; one sister, Mrs. Nellie Sikes of Hilliard; and five grandchildren. Pallbearers will be James Carroll, Andrew Carroll, Wilson Carroll, Addison Sikes, Cecil Sikes, J. L. Reeves, R. L. Tomlinson and Kenneth Tomlinson. The body will rest at the residence until 1:30 p.m. Friday.
Mark and Millie's daughter Lillian married Lonnie Freeman on May 3, 1959. Mark and Millie's daughter Mildred married Powell Freeman on July 14, 1953, and their daughter Stella married Virgil Davis on December 16, 1950. Mark and Millie's daughter Ruby married Carlos Carter, and their daughter Nellie married Edward Brown on December 15, 1956. Mark and Millie's son Frank married Martha Williams on July 3, 1962, and
their daughter Eva married Ralph Vanzant on March 12, 1960. Mark and Millie's son Robert, after many years as a bachelor, had a short-lived marriage to Annette Gregory. Mark and Millie's daughter Delaine married Ralph Tuggle. Robert, Delaine and Eva each have their family homes located off Tomlinson Road west of Route 121 in western Nassau County. Mark Tomlinson and Millie Carroll's daughter Nellie Tomlinson Sikes died at the age of
52 in 1988. Mildred Elizabeth "Millie" Carroll is currently in a nursing home in Nassau County. Amanda "Nellie" Genell Tomlinson Harris Tomlinson and Amanda Johnson's daughter Amanda "Nellie" Genell, born on March 30, 1904, married Roy Lee Sikes. Roy was born on March 17, 1902, in Florida to John Conova Sikes and Annabelle "Candy" Colson. Both of Roy's parents were
natives of Florida. In addition to Roy, John Sikes and Candy Colson were parents to Delia Ethel, Champion Dewey, Herman Franklin, Myrtle Addie, Roy Colson, Violet Sally, Clara Henrietta, Noah Elect, Lottie Bell, Johnnie Rosier, Alton Hampton, and Leon Moses. Nellie Tomlinson and Roy Sikes made their home in Nassau County where they became parents to Irene May, Roy Addison, Cecil Colson, Betty Louise, Geraldine,
John Harris, and Kenneth Lee. Amanda "Nellie" Genell Tomlinson died on October 23, 1966, and is buried in the Mill Creek Cemetery in western Nassau County, Florida. Sunday afternoon. A native of Charlton County, Georgia, Mrs. Sikes had resided in Nassau County for the past 60 years and was a member of the Buford Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Roy L. Sikes; three daughters, Mrs. Irene S. Stokes and Mrs. Geraldine Reeves, both of Hilliard, and Mrs. Betty L. Carter of Folkston, Georgia: three sons, Addison Sikes, Cecil Sikes and Kenneth Sikes, all of Hilliard; 24 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Mill Creek Cemetery with the Rev. Sam Stewart, pastor of Buford Grove Baptist Church, officiating. Active pallbearers will be Cleveland Sikes, Danny Sikes, Roy Sikes, Lewis Sikes, A. J. Stokes and Gary Johnson. Oxley Mortuary of Fernandina Beach is in charge of arrangements.
