A. J. Johnson's brother, John Jackson Johnson, Jr., passed away in 1915, leaving a large family. John's wife Emily Tomlinson was in poor health and was left with the task of rearing their large family. John Johnson, Jr. had inherited the old family homestead and farm from his father John J. Johnson. As Emily's health deteriorated, the court, upon her request, on September 15, 1920, appointed A. J. Johnson as guardian of John Johnson, Jr. and Emily Tomlinson's three minor children Virue, age 14; Sandol, age 17; and Lelia, age 19. Emily deeded over to A. J. the southern half, consisting of about 138 acres, of the old homestead property, the legacy of the three minor children. This land was a productive farm and A. J. became a farmer in addition to his duties as sheriff. Emily Tomlinson Johnson passed away on August 23, 1921, shortly after the land transfer, leaving A. J. and Texas with the responsibility of rearing Emily's three minor children.
